Now here’s a theory and a half, tractors weren’t “invented” as such. They were dropped here as alien tractor beams and since the aliens used them for nothing else were left behind as junk. A farmer comes along and looks at the tractor and sees more potential. He takes it and uses it to drive around his farm.
All his farmer friends are jealous and insist on being given the design to make their own. So they duplicate this tractor, never realizing that it used to be an alien weapon. And since it has already fired it’s single shot, they fail to duplicate the lethal components thus creating the harmless tractor.
