Oh wow, I have to share my Wednesday night experiences, I can’t not do it. I’m sorry – you must listen.

Story time.

I went out for a fancy dinner last night at Kabuki Teppenyaki restaurant in Stanford plaza with a pair of friends – as a delayed happy birthday dinner since they missed the real thing. We walk in and it’s very classy, we’re all a bit out of place (the westies that we are..) but get seated none the less and all kind of nervously sip our waters and stare at what we’ve gotten ourselves into.

My friends and I decide to share a bottle of sake and a group of chinese people are seated next to us. Everything seems very serious. The menu informed me that we order a set menu. So in other words there are about 10 options all including 5-6 courses. Wowzer. We ordered and straight away food started appearing on our table, salads, miso, entrees, I honestly cannot remember all the things I ate. That was even before the chef came out and started cooking.

We fumble with our chopsticks (because we’re not talented like that) and try to look upper class haha but finally the chef comes out and the chinese people start pepping up.

The chef is fantastically fun – a middle aged Japanese man called Kevin. Fires up the massive hot plate on the table in front of us, starts tossing around pepper shakers and knives, lights some prawns on fire etc. The food is amazing. And the funny chinese man sitting next to me is trying to buy the chef drinks.

Eventually I get tossed a bowl (literally) and Kevin throws raw eggs into it from across the room, then makes an omelette. Slices it, and flings it into peoples mouths (I caught mine first try woo!), then makes fried rice, and throws bowls of it at us to catch in our bowls. Was awesome. So super awesome. By this point we had made good friends with Kevin and the funny chinese man and we all decided we needed to get Kevin promoted so we got compliment cards from the manager and ended up writing about ‘Captain Kevin’ and all his wonderful feats.

The manager gave us chocolate bars for filling them in haha.

Anyway I ate tonnes more, 3 lamb chops, venison steak, sirloin steak god knows how many others things. Was amazing. Then I had dessert and was talking with the chinese man who then discovered it was my birthday dinner and bought me a cocktail. Then called the manager over and told her and scolded her for not bringing me a cake. So she sent me to the dessert buffet to have chocolate cake.

Then Kevin came back and insisted I have more. He offered me his arm and escorted me to the dessert and PILED up a plate of deliciousness. (This was my third dessert after like a 10 course meal…)

Anyway, Kevin ended up handing us his number, we left and ended up arriving at the Kingslander – where they do salsa on Wednesday nights. And all of a sudden I was dancing salsa with a little south American man?! But it was just such an awesome night. So much fun.
