You know, you just don’t realise how important it is to have a functional drivers window in your car.

I now have a renewed appreciatation for them. And I’ll tell you why.

On Friday I was going into town for a spot of dancing with my cousin, she picked me up and as a passing comment mentioned to me that her mother had broken the drivers electric window so it was un-usable. Along our journey it was making all sorts of noises, obviously trying to get itself unstuck, but to no prevail.

Now Friday night parking in town is not an easy thing so we head into a parking building. You know the ones that have that electronic automatic barrier arm? Yeah, you know they go up and out of your way when you pull a ticket out of the ticket machine. Yup the ticket machine you pull up next to, and put your window down to reach. Yeah, that’s the one.

So we pull up next to it, and have to open the door to get our ticket out. That’s fine, we can cope with that. So we go park the car, get our groove on and have a greatly enjoyable night. Heading home we yet again pull up to the ticket machine, open the door and successfully exit the parking building. Success!

Now being easter weekend, the roads are swarming with police. We’re driving along (in a completely legal fashion might I add) and come round a bend to a check point. This wouldn’t be a problem, neither of us have been drinking, we have a fully liscenced driver and a completely legal car. Sadly, it’s window won’t go down. So the police man saunters over and stands at the window with his little breath testy machine waiting for the window to come down. It doesn’t. My cousin is trying to open the door, but with the police man standing in the way (and no intentions of whalloping him with the door) it’s an awkward process. But we make it through, safely, with no legal repurcussions.

So by this point, with all the dancing and adventures we’ve worked up an appetite, and realising it’s after midnight our only option is Burger King drive through. But you need a functional window for that.

We pull up to the order box and open the door. Coming around to pick up the order we suddenly see the kerb by the window is three times it’s standard height making it impossible to get out of the car on that side. It’s decided that I will have to get out, walk around and go pay and collect the snacks. Just as I’m about to get out, the window goes down.

With a massive sigh of relief we go park the car and dig in. But as we all have now worked out, the window didn’t go back up. It was a cold drive home.
