Isn’t it a great feeling when you suddenly realise the only person in control of your life is yourself?

You’re steering this ship! You can sail the seas you want to! It’s certainly an empowering thought, though isn’t quite as easy as it sounds. Think about it, you’ve got to navigate consistently scanning the horizon or reading the stars (or the GPS), while manning the wheel, rigging the masts, catching the wind and finding time to eat and sleep!

If we want to get all metaphorical on it, I’m going to say the rigging the masts is you preparing yourself for the future. It’s learning, studying, developing and growing as a person so when the gust of wind comes to hurtle you toward your goals out on the horizon, you are fully prepared to do so.

Out there on the horizon is your destination, what you want to achieve, who you want to be and what you cannot for one moment, allow yourself to loose sight of. And then there’s manning the wheel, putting in the hard physical work, the elbow grease if you like. Putting in long hours, being strong and commited and focused and in control of where you are and where you want to go.

Just something I’ve been thinking about a fair bit today.

I think it’s because I got one of those silly forwards (except it wasn’t that silly) that said ” To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are”. It got me thinking about all those people who sit around complaining they don’t have this or that or they’re the victim and unfortunate and why doesn’t everything they’ve ever dreamed of just fall into their lap. And that’s why. They’re focusing on getting stuff but they’re never going to get anything of note without growing as a person and earning it one way or another.

Sure, I want a lot of stuff, but by george I’m willing to work at it.

It’s really set me off today, so much so I think I’m going to chart a course this afternoon. I’m going to chart a course to awesomeness, and I’m going to hoist my sails and wait for the wind to blow. The question is, are you sailing or drifting?
